About & mission

Building a Foundation for Lifelong Literacy

19

Years devoted to young learners

For 19 years, I have been passionate about teaching children phonics, reading, and writing. Seeing children struggle with early literacy inspired me to continue my education and earn my Wilson Certified Dyslexia Practitioner credential.

A mission rooted in possibility

Struggling to read does not define what a child can accomplish. With purposeful instruction, consistent practice, hard work, and perseverance, students can become more confident and successful readers and writers.

Research-based instruction

Lessons are based on the Science of Reading and incorporate structured literacy programs and Orton-Gillingham teaching methods. I regularly study research and attend professional learning focused on dyslexia and literacy.

Phonemic Awareness & Word Study

Students practice identifying and manipulating sounds, segmenting, blending, word study, and dictation.

Reading Fluency

Students work on accuracy, automaticity, appropriate pacing, expression, and prosody.

Reading Comprehension

Students strengthen listening and reading comprehension through silent and scaffolded reading. They learn to visualize text, identify important information, retell passages, and respond verbally and in writing.

Spelling

Students learn spelling rules, sound-symbol relationships, and common word patterns.

Grammar

Students develop an understanding of syntax, parts of speech, capitalization, and punctuation.

Sentence Composition & Writing

Students practice writing clear, grammatically correct responses while developing proofreading and editing skills.

Every component of each lesson is designed to help your child become a more capable and confident reader and writer at their grade level.

What Parents Are Saying

We’ve been working with Carmen Torres for over two years, and the progress my child has made has been amazing. He has truly benefited from her structured and thoughtful approach. Carmen consistently reinforces key skills in reading, writing, and math. She helps him build strong reading comprehension by focusing on making connections, answering questions, and developing inference and critical-thinking skills. In writing, she guides him through organizing his ideas, using outlines, and incorporating sensory details to strengthen his responses. She also ensures that he stays on top of his math assignments and fully understands the material. What I appreciate most is how she connects these lessons to what he is doing in school and prepares him for state tests. She not only supports his academics but also encourages him to apply these skills independently. Carmen is patient, dedicated, and truly invested in her students’ success. I highly recommend her to any parent looking for a tutor who delivers real results.

She is patient, encouraging, and truly cares. We have seen steady progress and have genuinely enjoyed working with her. I highly recommend Carmen!
